Mamra Almonds vs Regular Almonds: Differences

Walk into any dry-fruit shop and you will see two kinds of badam: large, flat, light-brown almonds, and smaller, curved, darker ones that cost much more. The second kind is Mamra badam. So what makes them different, and are they worth it?

What are Mamra almonds?

Mamra is a traditional variety of almond grown in small quantities in cooler, hilly regions such as the Kashmir Valley. The trees yield far fewer nuts than commercial orchards, and the almonds are usually grown and dried in the traditional way. That limited supply is the main reason Mamra badam cost more.

How to recognise Mamra badam

Look at the shape – most nuts are curved with a hollow side, not flat.
The paper test – press a crushed almond onto a piece of paper. Mamra almonds leave a clear oil mark because of their higher natural oil.
Taste one raw – Mamra has a deeper, sweeter almond flavour.

Best ways to eat Mamra almonds

Soaked overnight – soak 5–6 almonds in water at night, peel and eat them in the morning, the way many Indian families have done for generations.
Badam milk – grind soaked, peeled almonds with warm milk, a pinch of saffron and a little cardamom.
Roasted – dry-roast on low heat for a crunchy snack.
In sweets – badam halwa, kheer, barfi and laddoos.
On Kashmiri Kahwa – thinly sliced almonds are the traditional topping for kahwa.

How to store almonds

Keep them in an airtight container in a cool, dry place away from sunlight. Because Mamra almonds have more natural oil, in hot weather it is best to store them in the refrigerator to keep them fresh for longer.
